The Youngstown State baseball team will play 15 home games in April and host a pair of Kids Day games in May as part of its 2016 schedule, Penguins head coach Steve Gillispie announced on Friday.
The program's fourth season under Gillispie will begin on Feb. 19 at Western Kentucky, and the Penguins will play 17 road games before their scheduled home opener on March 24. The Kids Day games will be on May 13 and May 17, and the Horizon League Tournament is set for May 25-28.
The Penguins and Hilltoppers are scheduled for a three-game series from Feb. 19-21, and YSU will have non-conference series at Fresno State, Belmont and Missouri over the next three weekends. Youngstown State will begin Horizon League play at Wright State on March 18, and its 17th consecutive road game to start the season will be on March 22 at Ohio.
Youngstown State's home opener will be on March 24 as part of a three-game series against Horizon League opponent Milwaukee, it will begin a stretch where YSU will play 19 out of 25 games at Eastwood Field. The Penguins will play at Penn State on March 29 to conclude the month.
YSU's April slate begins with a three-game home series against UIC on April 1, and it will host Toledo on April 6. Youngstown State's lone league series on the road in the month will be at Oakland April 8-10, and YSU stay on the road to play at Kent State on April 13. A series against Horizon League newcomers Northern Kentucky will begin on April 15, and the final road game of the month will be at West Virginia on April 19. Youngstown State will then host Pittsburgh on April 20, doubleheaders with Wright State and Oakland on April 22-23, Bowling Green on April 27 and Canisius in a three-game series that starts on April 29.
After the series with Canisius wraps up on May 1, YSU will play 11 of its final 14 games of the regular season on the road. The Penguins will play doubleheaders at Milwaukee and UIC on May 7-8, and they'll play midweek games at Pitt and Bowling Green May 10-11. The first Kids Day game at Eastwood FIeld will be at 11 a.m. against Valparaiso on May 13, and it will be part of a league doubleheader against the Crusaders. YSU will then play a doubleheader at Northern Kentucky on May 15, and the Penguins will host Kent State in the second Kids Day game on May 17 at 11 a.m. The regular season will conclude with a three-game set at Valparaiso from May 19-21.
For the first time since Youngstown State has joined the conference, the Horizon League Tournament will be played at the site of the regular-season champion. The championship had been held at a pre-determined site.
