The Youngstown State baseball team will host Toledo in its first home midweek game of the season and play a Horizon League series at Oakland this weekend. First pitch against the Rockets is set for 3 p.m., which is an earlier start than the original schedule due to rain in the evening forecast. The Penguins and Golden Grizzlies will play on Friday at 3 p.m. on Friday, 1 p.m. on Saturday and noon on Sunday.
Youngstown State is coming off a split in a rain-shortened series with UIC last weekend that gave the Penguins their first Horizon League win of the season. YSU beat the Flames 9-1 in a game that began Friday and finished on Saturday after rain suspended play, and UIC bounced back to win Saturday's original game 15-1. Sunday's game was canceled due to rain, which was YSU's first weather cancelation of the season.
YSU posted season highs with 15 hits and nine runs in the victory over the Flames, and several Penguins had strong weeks at the plate. Andrew Kendrick went 5-for-9 with three walks to bring his average up to .243, and he continues to lead the Penguins in slugging percentage. Billy Salem hit .417 last week and has a team-best .294 average for the year, and Alex Larivee had four hits in the win over the Flames.
Collin Floyd (1-4, 9.78 ERA), who made his first midweek start of the season last week at Penn State, will get the start on Wednesday against the Rockets. Floyd has 29 strikeouts in 23 innings, and he has a 9.78 ERA in seven previous starts. Junior left-hander Joe King (1-3, 4.19 ERA) and junior righty Jeremy Quinlan (1-4, 4.29 ERA) will start the first two games of the series at Oakland. King pitched the opener against UIC and held the Flames to one run in six innings. Quinlan, who allowed surrendered one run in eight innings two starts ago, will be looking to rebound from last week's outing against UIC in which he allowed six runs in three innings.
Toledo will come to Eastwood Field on Wednesday with a 5-23-1 record so far this season. The Rockets are in the middle of an 11-game road stretch that began last week with a contest at Ohio State and a three-game series at Bowling Green. Toledo lost 9-8 at Ohio State, won the series opener at Bowling Green 4-2 and dropped the next two 5-3 and 7-3. Sophomore left-hander Alex Wagner (0-1, 7.52 ERA) will be making his second start of the season against YSU on Wednesday.
Oakland begins this week with a 12-11 overall record and a 4-2 mark in Horizon League games. The Golden Grizzlies will play at Central Michigan on Wednesday before YSU comes to campus. Oakland went 1-2 at UIC in the opening weekend of league play and swept Northern Kentucky last weekend.
Next week, YSU will play at Kent State on Wednesday before beginning a three-game series at Eastwood Field on Friday against Northern Kentucky. The Penguins and Norse will play at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, 2 p.m. on Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday.
