With Youngstown State's fall semester beginning earlier this week, YSU head baseball coach Steve Gillispie is pleased to announce the seven preferred walkons who have now officially joined the program for the 2015-16 season.
The seven additions to the roster are Dominic Brown, Travis Brumbaugh, Joel Hake, Will Jamieson, Nico Padovan, Jesse Slinger and Hunter Snyder. Brumbaugh, Jamieson and Slinger are right-handed pitchers, Hake and Padovan are infielders, Snyder is a catcher and Brown is an outfielder. Four of the players are from Ohio, including Mahoning County standouts Hake (Ursuline High School) and Snyder (Springfield Local High School). Two more are from Western Pennsylvania, and Padovan is from California.
Gillispie's comments on each of the incoming players are below. The seven additions brings the total number of new players on YSU's 2016 roster to 18.
Dominic Brown | OF | L/L | Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne
"Dom is an exceptional athlete who, we believe, will make great strides as he concentrates on baseball full time. He has shown the ability to defend centerfield at a Division I level, and the addition of his left-handed bat should provide multiple options for us as we look at putting lineups together for the spring."
Travis Brumbaugh | RHP | R/R | New Wilmington, Pa./Wilmington Area
"Travis is another one of the exceptional athletes that has been added to the roster. He excelled in multiple sports during his high school career and shows the potential to make an impact during his time at YSU. We have already seen a mid to upper 80s fastball and quality offspeed pitches, and the more he works on his game the better those should get."
Joel Hake | IF/P | R/R | Youngstown, Ohio/Ursuline
"Joel demonstrates the ability to be a two-way player at the college level. He definitely has the arm strength and actions to play the left side of the infield, and that arm strength also plays well into his potential on the mound. He is extremely dedicated to working to improve, and his versatility adds great depth to our roster."
Will Jamieson | RHP | R/R | Newbury, Ohio/Lake Catholic
"Will is a player we saw in our showcase camp last winter. He is another young man that was brought into our program with an already average Division I fastball and a real ability to spin a breaking pitch. He has had a great deal of success at the high school level, and that leads us to believe he can make a contribution at our level early in his career."
Nico Padovan | IF | R/R | San Pedro, Calif./Los Angeles Harbor College
"Nico is a young man that really impressed us with his various baseball skills, and he played nearly every position on the infield during his junior college career. His arm strength across the diamond is as good as anyone I have had in 28 years, and offensively he put up some very solid numbers this past spring. He is another newcomer that will provide multiple options and versatility for our team."
Jesse Slinger | RHP | R/R | Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair
"Jesse is another multi-sport athlete who projects a very high ceiling. We believe he should flash an upper 80s fastball by February, and the current level of his breaking ball is good enough to look at him to fill the vacancies that graduation left for the back end of our bullpen."
Hunter Snyder | C/OF | R/R | New Middletown, Ohio/Springfield
"Hunter is a great example of the theme of this final recruiting push. He had an outstanding career in three sports at Springfield, and that athleticism made him stand out as a prospect for us. He will work in centerfield and behind the plate for us, again providing much needed depth and versatility within our 2015-16 roster."
