Nine returning members of the Youngstown State baseball team were busy playing in various leagues across the country this summer in preparation for the upcoming 2017-18 season at YSU.
Senior RHP Alex Bellardini pitched a team-high 61 innings in nine starts for the Geneva RedWings of the Perfect Game League. He registered two complete games, 37 strikeouts and a 2.80 earned run average on his way to an impressive 6-1 record. The RedWings won 25 games on the season and clinched a postseason berth. Bellardini was selected for the PGCBL All-Star Team and named Second Team All-PGCBL for his performance.
Senior OF Trey Bridis had a strong summer with the Layette Aviators of the Prospect League, hitting .292 with 62 hits in 57 games. He logged two home runs, 29 RBIs, 32 BB and 11 stolen bases. The Aviators registered a 37-25 record for the season and went on to win the 2017 Prospect League Championship. Bridis was also selected to play in the Prospect League All-Star Game.
Junior LHP Collin Floyd appeared in eight games, making seven starts for the Mankato Moondogs of the Northwoods League. He posted 36 strikeouts, a 2.70 ERA and a 4-0 record in 46.2 innings pitched. For his efforts, Floyd was named to the Northwoods League All-Star Team. The Moondogs had an impressive season with an overall record of 44-28 and a playoff appearance. Their season ended with a loss in North Division Championship, just one round short of earning a trip to the Summer Collegiate World Series.
Junior OF Kyle Benyo hit for a .251 batting average with six home runs and 23 RBIs in 45 games for the Green Bay Bullfrogs of the Northwoods League. He was also selected to participate in the Northwoods League All-Star Home Run Derby. The Bullfrogs finished with a record of 23-49 on the season.
Junior RHP Gary Clift Jr. logged 19.2 innings in seven relief appearances for the Kenosha Kingfish of the Northwoods League. He only allowed two earned runs on his way to compiling a 0.91 ERA with 14 strikeouts and a 1-0 record. The Kingfish finished with an overall record of 36-36.
Senior 1B Andrew Kendrick hit .242 with three home runs and six RBIs in 10 games for the Wisconsin Woodchucks of the Northwoods League. The Woodchucks finished with an overall record of 26-46 for the summer in the South Division of the Northwoods League.
Sophomore C Tanner Montgomery walked 23 times and scored 16 runs in 36 at-bats to earn an impressive a .567 on-base percentage for the Fuquay-Varina Twins of the Carolina-Virginia Collegiate League. His .567 OBP was one of the highest in the entire CVCL. The Twins finished with an overall record of 25-28 which was good for third place in the Eastern Division of the CVCL.
Senior C Anthony Santoro played this summer for the Palm Beach Snowbirds in the Collegiate League of the Palm Beaches. The Snowbirds finished the summer with a record of 11-17.
Sophomore C Lou Cardona played this summer for the Creekside Crocodiles of the Tri-State Collegiate League. The Crocodiles finished the summer with an overall record of 15-22.
