Youngstown State left-hander Collin Floyd has been named the Horizon League Pitcher of the Week for the period ending April 1, the conference office announced on Monday.
Floyd, a junior from Akron, Ohio, did not allow an earned run and struck out 10 batters over six innings as the Penguins beat UIC 7-2 on Saturday. Floyd surrendered two unearned runs while holding the Flames to four hits and one walk. The 10 strikeouts were just one shy of his career high, and he recorded at least one strikeout in each inning.
Floyd has been outstanding in his first three Horizon League starts this season as the Penguins have won six of nine to begin conference play. He has allowed just one earned run over 20 innings and has 24 strikeouts in that stretch. He's surrendered just 12 hits and five walks while earning victories over Milwaukee, Northern Kentucky and UIC. For the year, Floyd is 3-4 with a 3.35 ERA and 46 strikeouts in 40.1 innings.
Floyd and the Penguins will play five games in a six-day span this week. They will begin the busy stretch by hosting Pitt on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Eastwood Field, and they will play at Pitt on Wednesday before traveling for a three-game series at Oakland over the weekend.
