Nine baseball student-athletes from Ohio and Pennsylvania have each signed a National Letter of Intent to continue their academic and baseball futures at Youngstown State University, YSU head coach Dan Bertolini announced on Thursday.
"We really wanted to continue bringing in not only high-quality baseball players, but exceptional people and families, and I think we did a great job with this group," Bertolini said. "I want to thank our administration and academic advisors for all of their time and hard work to help make this day a success. I also want to thank Eric Bunnell and Shane Davis, as they have made a huge impact in the short time they have been here as well as Eric Smith, who has done an outstanding job identifying these talented student-athletes."
The class includes Ohioans Kenny Misik, Braeden O'Shaughnessy, Bryce Warwick and Dylan Carpenter as well as Pennsylvania natives Andre Good, Josh Hoffman, Turner Grau, Trey Law and Casey Marshalwitz. Carpenter, Hoffman, Law and O'Shaugnessy are position players, Misik and Warwick are pitchers and Good, Grau and Marshalwitz could be two-way players.
"When you look at this year's group, athleticism, versatility and toughness are probably the three best words to describe these young men. We always look to recruit local players first and we were able to bring in seven players who are from within 100 miles of our campus," Bertolini said. "Several of these young men are multi-sport athletes who are some of the very best players in their area and state in other sports as well. Many of them are football and basketball players who really bring that added toughness that we are continuing to look for."
"On the offensive side, we think we have really increased our team speed and athleticism," Bertolini said. "This group can do a little bit of everything, with guys that can hit for power and also lay down a bunt for a hit. There are some really strong defenders in this group and with many of these players being able to play multiple positions, it adds depth all over the field. We want to build this program through strong pitching and great defense and there is no shortage in this class. We have added some power as well as both left and right-handed arms to continue building depth in our staff."
