The Youngstown State baseball team will play road games at Florida State and Mississippi State and host 22 home games including a matchup with Ohio State at Eastwood Field in 2019, Head Coach Dan Bertolini has announced.
The 2019 schedule includes a total of six opponents from Power Five conferences and six more from the Mid-American Conference.
The Penguins will open the 2019 season on Feb. 15 at Mississippi State, who is coming off an appearance in the College World Series, and they will proceed to play their first 19 games on the road. The final of those 19 games will be at West Virginia on March 19, and the home opener is slated for March 22 against Oakland.
After the opening series in Starkville, YSU will play a three-game series at Florida State the next weekend on Feb. 22-24. The Seminoles reached the NCAA Regionals last season before being eliminated by Mississippi State. The Penguins will then travel to play a three-game set at NCAA Super Regional qualifier Tennessee Tech on March 1-3.
YSU will remain on the road for a contest at Pittsburgh on March 5 and a four-game series at Miami (Ohio) March 8-10. The Penguins will follow that up with a mid-week contest at Kent State on March 12 and a return trip to Pittsburgh on the 13th.
Horizon League play for the Penguins will start on the road at Northern Kentucky on March 15-17, and YSU is scheduled to play 30 conference games in a nine-week span between March 15 and May 18. The team's home opener is slated for March 22 against Oakland to open a three-game league series with the Golden Grizzlies.
YSU will remain in Ohio for a non-conference road contest at Bowling Green on March 26 before hosting Pittsburgh the following day. The March schedule will conduce with a three-game series at defending Horizon League champion Wright State on March 29-31.
April will start with the Penguins hosting Kent State on the third and UIC for a three-game series on April 5-7. YSU will play a road contest at Big Ten foe Penn State on April 9 before hosting Toledo at Eastwood Field the next day. The Penguins will then head back on the road for a three-game league set at Milwaukee on April 12-14 before beginning a season-long, five-game home stand.
The home stretch will start with a three-game series against Northern Kentucky on April 18-20 before non-conference matchups with Ohio and St. Bonaventure on the 23rd and the 24th respectively. The month will conclude with three league games at Oakland on April 26-28.
YSU will play 13 of 19 games at home between April 18 and the regular season finale on May 18. That stretch will include a pair of four-game home stands in the month of May. The month will begin with a non-conference game against Eastern Michigan on the first before Wright State comes to town for a three-game Horizon League series on May 3-5.
The Penguins will head to Chicago for a three-game league set at UIC on May 10-12 before hosting Ohio State at Eastwood Field on the 14th. YSU will conclude the regular season at home with a three-game league series against Milwaukee on May 16-18.
The Horizon League Tournament is scheduled for May 22-25 at the home of the regular-season champion.
