The Youngstown State football team is two weeks and nine practices into spring camp following its workout on Wednesday at Stambaugh Stadium. YSU concluded the practice with a long, physical team period that saw work on all situations.
In the team period, YSU worked on third-down situations, red-zone situations and moving the football. During the third-down sequences, the defense made some big stops to slow the offense. In the red-zone situations, Torrian Pace had a scoring run up the middle, Jordan Thompson had a nice scoring run, Patrick Angle connected with Jelani Berassa in the back of the end zone.
The first team offense was able to move the ball down the field, but the defense had a key stop at the end of practice.
YSU opened with individual drills for the first hour-plus of the Wednesday's practice on a sunny, but cool afternoon.
Head Coach Eric Wolford said tailback Demond Hymes will sit out the rest of practice with a sprained knee and ankle. Linebacker Travis Williams did not practice and the defensive line had to rely on a tremendous amount of youth the seniors Nick DeKraker and Aronde Stanton missing portions of the team period because of injuries.
The Penguins return to practice on Friday. The workout is scheduled to begin a 4 p.m. The second scrimmage of the spring is set for Saturday morning at 10 o'clock.
