The Youngstown State football team worked out for two-and-a-half hours on a perfect Friday at Stambaugh Stadium. The Penguins worked out in helmets and both sides of the ball had solid performances to the delight of third-year Head Coach Eric Wolford.
On Friday, the Penguins again worked on individual drills for a good portion of the workout. In the first team session, all the coaches were hands on with both sides of the ball. In the 35-minute team period to conclude practice, Jelani Berassa made a nifty catch on a tipped pass, quarterback Kurt Hess continued his solid start to spring camp and the defense stepped up to make a variety of plays. Backup quarterback Patrick Angle also had some nice throws while the wide receivers continued to make strides. Sophomore Andrew Williams caught a 50-50 ball on a deep pass midway through practice.
YSU also worked on punts and and punt coverages going over some of the NCAA rule changes that were implemented in the offseason.
Sophomore guard Fred Herdman has been working with the top unit at left guard in place of Lamar Mady who has been held out with a knee injury. Wide receiver Andre Stubbs was in attendance, but did not practice on Friday because of a stomach aliment.
On defense, Kyle Sirl, Steve Zaborsky, Aronde Stanton and Trevor Strickland have been with the one's on the defensive line with end Josh Fenderson making an impact early so far. At linebacker, Teven Williams, Travis Williams and Dom Rich were with the top unit while Dubem Nwadiogbu made a couple of standout plays on Friday. In the secondary, Devont'a Davis, Jimmy May, Josh Garner and Jeremey Edwards have been working with the starting unit.
