The Youngstown State football team worked out for more than two hours on a brisk Monday afternoon at Stambaugh Stadium. The Penguins had a new face among them on Monday, as former men's basketball player Ashen Ward took part in the workout.
Monday's workout was the coolest by far of the first four practices with temperatures in the lower 40s and a strong wind out of the north.
Ward, who has never played football before, has good size at 6-feet-3, 214 pounds and played tight end on Monday. He fit in well during his first collegiate practice outdoors.
OT Andrew Radakovich will miss the rest of spring camp with an injured right leg. Head Coach Eric Wolford said Radakovich's absence will give a chance for Brandon Ferguson, Andrew Sinko and some other lineman to step up. YSU is already without guard Lamar Mady who is sitting out this spring while recovering from off-season knee surgery.
Ward finished his basketball career with 828 points, 362 rebounds, 184 assists and 74 steals in 119 games played (73 starts). He knocked down 150 3-pointers in his four seasons, making 287 field goals and 122 free throws. Ward started 58 of the final 59 games he played in a Penguins uniform. He made more than 50 3-pointers in his junior and senior campaigns.
In 2011-12, he made a career-high 102 field goals, 54 free throws and 53 3-pointers. For the season he started all 30 games, scored 311 points, grabbed 146 rebounds, had 78 assists, 24 steals and five blocked shots.
The Penguins will hold their fifth practice of the spring on Wednesday at 4 p.m. in Stambaugh Stadium.
