Redshirt freshman TB Joe Alessi was named the Missouri Valley Football Conference's Newcomer of the Week after amassing an impressive 190 yards in the final 13 minutes of the Penguins' regular-season finale at Missouri State yesterday.
Alessi had seven carries against the Bears and averaged 27.1 yards per rush. On his first touch he scored on a 61-yard touchdown run with 12:05 left in the game. His next carry came at the 7:10 mark and that was a 75-yard touchdown run.
On the Penguins final drive of the game he had carries for eight, five, two, three and 36 as he finished with 190 for the game.
He led the Penguins in rushing for the game and was a kickoff returner and was part of the punt team during the game. He was one of three YSU players to finish with more than 100 yards rushing against Missouri State.
The Penguins (8-3) open play in the FCS playoffs this Saturday against Samford. Kickoff for the contest against the Bulldogs is set for 5 p.m. at Stambaugh Stadium.
