Reed, Turner, Gibson Named to MVFC All-Newcomer Team

The Youngstown State football team placed freshmen Bryce Gibson and Christian Turner and junior Justus Reed on the 2017 Missouri Valley Football Conference All-Newcomer Team the league announced on Tuesday.

All three players were key contributors for the Penguins in 2017. Gibson started all 11 games at cornerback while Reed was a pass-rush specialist and Turner finished second on the team in all-purpose yards.

Gibson started all 11 contests at cornerback as a true freshman. On the season he had 35 total tackles, 28 of which came in MVFC play. He was the first true freshman to start at cornerback for the Penguins since 2011. Overall his 11 starts were the most in the secondary were the most by a true freshman in school history.

Turner played in all 11 games, starting two, and finished with 997 all-purpose yards in his true freshman season. He rushed for 440 yards, had 272 yards receiving and 285 yards on kickoff returns.

Reed, a transfer from Florida, tied for the team lead in sacks and only played seven games.

Turner finished second on the team in all-purpose yardage with 997 yards as a true freshman…had 440 rushing yards, 272 receiving yards and 285 on kickoff returns…in 11 games had 83 carries for 440 yards and caught 21 passes for 272 yards…in MVFC games had 578 all-purpose yards (228 rushing, 98 receiving and 242 on kickoff returns).

Started all 11 games at cornerback as a true freshman…credited with 35 tackles, 24 of which were solo stops…was second on the team with seven pass breakups…in MVFC games had 28 tackles, 19 of which were solos…best game was a six-tackle effort (five solos) against North Dakota State…had PBUs in seven games…YSU's pass defense allowed just 143.7 yards per game and a 46.7 completion percentage.

Reed played in seven games, missing four in the middle of the year with an arm injury…a designated pass rusher he tied for the team lead with five sacks and was second with 5.5 TFLs…also had seven QB hurries…returned a fumble for a touchdown at SIU following his strip sack…had 15 total tackles, nine of which were solos…had two sacks against Robert Morris…in MVFC play was credited with three tackles, a sack and a QB hurry.
