Three Penguins Earn Academic All-MVFC Honors

Nathan Mays, Kyle Hegedus, Joe Alessi

Youngstown State senior football student-athletes Kyle Hegedus, Joe Alessi and Nathan Mays have been named Academic All-Missouri Valley Football Conference selections, the league announced on Wednesday.

Hegedus and Alessi were named to the first team while Mays was a second-team recipient. Hegedus was a second-team honoree in 2017.

The last time YSU had two first-team All-MVFC academic picks was in 2012. 

DB Kyle Hegedus, YSU, 5-11, 195, Sr., 3.89 Biology
CoSIDA First-Team All-District 5 selection…finished with a team-high 64 total tackles and led the team with 41 solo stops…had two interceptions and two forced fumbles….in MVFC play had 42 total tackles…finished the season with a nine-tackle effort against Illinois State…had at least five tackles in six MVFC games…is enrolled in the school's Masters of Athletic Training program.

TB Joe Alessi, YSU, 5-10, 190, Sr., 3.80 Biology
Rushed for 809 yards on 136 attempts and had five touchdowns…in MVFC games, rushed for 456 yards on 89 carries and had two scores…had 100-yard games vs. Illinois State, Western Illinois and Robert Morris…caught 12 passes for 118 yards.

QB Nathan Mays, YSU, 6-3, 220, Sr., 3.67 Professional Communication (Grad)
Mays played in 10 games and started eight contests…completed 91-of-149 passes for 1,287 yards and 13 touchdowns…rushed for 439 yards on 88 carries and scored a team-high six touchdowns…in MVFC games, completed 56-of-92 passes for 744 yards and eight touchdowns…rushed 52 times for 92 yards and two scores.
