The Youngstown State men's basketball team (6-2) hits the road for three straight road games starting with a match up at Buffalo, Saturday, Dec. 10. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m. at Alumni Arena. The game can be heard on 570 WKBN-AM.
The Buffalo Series
This is the 27th meeting between Youngstown State and Buffalo. The Guins own a slight 14-12 advantage in the series that dates back to 1963. Last season, the Guins snapped a three-game losing streak to the Bulls with a 64-53 win at the Beeghly Center. The last time YSU won in Buffalo was a 59-56 victory on Dec. 10, 1979.
Buffalo is currently 5-2 overall and is coming off an 82-74 win over Niagara on Dec. 7. Zach Filzen leads the Bulls with 16.9 points per game while Javon McCrea is averaging 15 points and eight rebounds per contest. Mitchell Watt is also in double figures scoring 13.1 points per game.
Last Time Against Buffalo
The Guins defeated the Bulls, 64-53, at the Beeghly Center on Nov. 16, 2010. Ashen Ward led the Guins with 13 points and Kendrick Perry had eight points. The Bulls also connected on just 9-of-27 from the free-throw line.
Last Time Out
The Guins defeated Fredonia State 69-35 on Dec. 6 at the Beeghly Center. Blake Allen led the Guins with 14 points and DuShawn Brooks had 13. Kendrick Perry added 12 points and a team-high five rebounds.
11 Straight At Home vs. Non-League Foes
With its 69-35 win over Fredonia State on Dec. 6, the Guins have won their last 11 games at home against non-Horizon League opponents. The last time the Guins lost at home to a non-conference foe was Robert Morris, 72-67, on Dec. 30, 2010.
Eargle Blocks Ranks 8th
Junior Damian Eargle has 35 blocks in eight games this season. His total already ranks eighth on the YSU single-season blocks chart. He needs two more to move into sixth and five more to move into fifth place. His 91 last season rank second on the list.
Allen Streakin From 3
Junior Blake Allen has made at least one 3-pointer in all eight games this season and has made at least one in 15 straight contests dating back to last year. He has also made at least three 3-pointers in five of the eight games this year. Allen also leads the Horizon League with 3.3 3-pointers made per game.
Fewest Points in 41 Years
Allowing 35 points to Fredonia State on Dec. 6 mark the fewest points allowed by the Guins since a 60-35 victory over Hiram on Dec. 22, 1970.
Brooks Named Player of the Week
For his performance last week, senior DuShawn Brooks was named the Horizon League Player of the Week for Dec. 5. Brooks averaged 20.5 points per game and shot 61.5 percent from the field and 64.3 percent from 3-point range. He scored a career-high 24 points against Detroit on Dec. 1 to lead the Guins to a 64-61 win. He also led the team with 17 points in a one-point loss to Wright State on Dec. 3. The last YSU player to earn the award was DeAndre Mays on Jan. 11, 2010.
Ward Now Ranks 10th
With 13 3-pointers this season, senior Ashen Ward now ranks 10th all-time with 110 career 3-pointers. He needs four more to move into ninth and seven more to move into eighth place.
Eargle Moves Into Third
Junior Damian Eargle has moved into third place on the YSU career blocks chart in just 38 games played. Eargle has 126 blocked shots and needs just nine more to move into second place past David Brown (134, 1997-2001).
Best Start Since 1997-98
At 6-2, the Guins are off to their best start since the 1997-98 season which they went 20-9 and reached the Mid-Continent Conference Tournament Championship game. Now the Penguins are searching for their first 7-2 start since that same season. The Guins went 8-2 after 10 games in 1997-98.
Guins Celebrate 40 Years in Beeghly
The 2011-12 campaign is the 40th season the Beeghly Center has been the home of Youngstown State men's basketball. YSU first took to the court in the Beeghly Center in 1972-73. YSU has a record of 316-233 in games played in the Beeghly Center.
Nearing 1,000 Wins
The Guins are approaching a significant milestone in the program's history. YSU has won 998 games and needs just two more to collect the program's 1,000th win.

The 88 Percent
The Guins' offense has basically come from its five starters this season. Kendrick Perry, Blake Allen, Damian Eargle, Ashen Ward and DuShawn Brooks combine of an average of 58.6 points per game. As a team, the Guins are averaging 66.9 points per game, which translates into the starters scoring 88 percent of the team's points.
Guins Setting Record Pace
The Guins have made 74 3-pointers in just seven games this season for an average of 9.3 3-pointers made per game. They are on pace to shatter the school's single-season mark of 235 set last year. If the Guins continue this pace over the next 22 guaranteed games, they will finish the season with 278 3-pointers made.
In the Zone
Over the last four contests, senior DuShawn Brooks has certainly been in the zone. Brooks is shooting 58.1 percent (25-of-43) from the field and 59.1 percent (13-of-22) from 3-point range while averaging 15.8 points per game. In the first four games, Brooks shot just 18.6 percent (8-of-43) from the field and was 0-of-6 from behind the arc.
Brooks Has Career Day at Detroit
Senior DuShawn Brooks turned in a career-best performance with 24 points on 9-of-13 shooting from the floor, including 6-of-9 from 3-point range.
Eargle Third Nationally
Junior Damian Eargle continues to be a one of the top shot blockers in the country. Eargle currently ranks third nationally with 4.4 blocks per game. Last season, he finished the year ranked 10th in the country with 3.0 blocks per game.
The Guins have had a penchant for close games this season. Four of the eight games have been decided by four points or less. The last three contests against Division I foes have been decided by a total of four points.
Guins in the Nation
The Guins are represented well in the national statistics. Junior Blake Allen ranks 21st with 3.3 3-pointers made per game and 55th with a .431 3-point field-goal percentage. As a team, the Guins rank 13th nationally with 9.3 3-pointers made per game and 43rd with a .394 3-point field-goal percentage
Eargle Block Machine
Junior Damian Eargle has tallied at least one block in every game this season. He has also recorded multiple blocks in seven of eight games and has posted at least three blocks six times.
Allen, Perry Score 20
Junior Blake Allen and sophomore Kendrick Perry became the first duo to score at least 20 points in game since Vytas Sulskis (25) and Damian Eargle (24) accomplished the feat against Malone on Dec. 13, 2010. Allen scored 25 and Perry posted 23 against Penn State on Nov. 23.
Guins Tie 3-Point Record, Again
For the second time this season, the Guins tied the school single-game mark with 14 3-pointers game against Penn State on Nov. 23. The Guins also made 14 against Notre Dame College on Nov. 15. The previous time YSU made 14 3 pointers in a game was against Butler on Jan. 9, 2011.
Fewest Points In Win Since 2000
The Guins' 53 points in the victory over UC-Riverside are the fewest points scored in win since they defeated IUPUI, 43-41, on Jan. 6, 2000.
Eargle Just Missed Triple Double
Damian Eargle nearly missed becoming the first player in YSU history to record a triple-double of any variety. Eargle scored 11 points with 11 rebounds and a career-high eight blocks against UC-Riverside on Nov. 18.
Guins Top 3-Point Team
Just eight games into the season, the Guins are the Horizon League's top 3-point shooting team. YSU leads the circuit with a .392 3-point percentage and 9.3 3-pointers made per game.
The Guins take finals next week then are back on the road to take on another Mid-American Conference foe when they visit Toledo, Dec. 17, at 7 p.m.
Slocum In Elite Company
Youngstown State Head Coach Jerry Slocum is one of just 11 active Division I head coaches with at least 600 career victories. Slocum currently ranks sixth on that list with 644 career coaching victories.
Eargle Has Chance For 1,000
In under three seasons of playing college basketball, junior Damian Eargle has scored more than 600 points with 689. Eargle needs just 311 more points to reach 1,000 for his entire career, which includes 268 points during the 2008-09 season at UNC-Greensboro. Last season, Eargle ranked second on the squad with 339 points for an average of 11.3 points per game.
Perry Nets Career Scoring High
Sophomore Kendrick Perry scored a career-high 28 points on 9-of-17 shooting from the field to lead the Guins to a 76-69 win over Samford on Nov. 12. Perry's 28 points are the most points scored by a sophomore since Doug Underwood scored 28 against Green Bay on Jan. 29, 2003. He also made four 3-pointers with four assists and four steals.
Last to Score 30
With 30 points against Loyola on Jan. 9, 2010, DeAndre Mays set a career-high and became the first player to score at least 30 points since Keston Roberts scored 31 against Detroit on Feb. 27, 2007. Mays' performance was the 10th time under Jerry Slocum a player has scored at least 30 points in a game. YSU had just 10 30-point plus performances from Feb. 1988 to Dec. 2005.
