Men's Basketball Returns Home to Face Robert Morris Thursday Night

Game Notes vs. Robert Morris

The Youngstown State men's basketball team (6-5) returns home for the first time since Dec. 6 when it hosts Robert Morris, Thursday, Dec. 22. Tipoff is slated for 7:05 p.m. at the Beeghly Center. The game can be heard on 570 WKBN-AM.

The Robert Morris Series
This is the 13th meeting between Youngstown State and Robert Morris in a series that dates back to 1989. The Colonials own an 8-4 edge in the all-time series and have won the last six meetings. Last season, the Colonials won 90-60 in Moon Township, Pa.. The last time the Penguins defeated Robert Morris was a 69-56 victory on Jan. 2, 2001.

About Robert Morris
Robert Morris is currently 9-3 and is coming off a 64-54 win over Hampton on Dec. 17. The Colonials also lost to Horizon League member Cleveland State, 62-58, on Dec. 8. Velton Jones leads the Colonials with 16.8 points per game. Coron Williams is averaging 12.7 points per game. As a team, the Colonials are shooting 42 percent from the field and averaging 67.4 points per game.

Guins Celebrate 40 Years in Beeghly
The 2011-12 campaign is the 40th season the Beeghly Center has been the home of Youngstown State men's basketball. YSU first took to the court in the Beeghly Center in 1972-73. YSU has a record of 316-233 in games played in the Beeghly Center.

Nearing 1,000 Wins
The Guins are approaching a significant milestone in the program's history. YSU has won 998 games and needs just two more to collect the program's 1,000th win.

Last Time Out
Senior DuShawn Brooks scored a game-high 20 points but the Guins committed a season-high 21 turnovers and fell to Akron, 88-62, on Dec. 19.

11 Straight vs. Non-League Foes
With its 69-35 win over Fredonia State on Dec. 6, the Guins have won their last 11 games at home against non-Horizon League opponents. The last time the Guins lost at home to a non-conference foe was Robert Morris, 72-67, on Dec. 30, 2010.

Eargle Single-Season Blocks Rank 4th
Junior Damian Eargle has 49 blocks in 11 games this season. His total already ranks fourth on the YSU single-season blocks chart. His 91 last season rank second on the list.

Allen Streakin From 3
Junior Blake Allen has made at least one 3-pointer in all 11 games this season and has made at least one in 18 straight contests dating back to last year. He has also made at least three 3-pointers in seven of the 11 games this year. Allen also leads the Horizon League with 3.3 3-pointers made per game. Allen has also made 75 3-pointers in the last 28 games.

Perry Improving
Sophomore Nate Perry is starting to find his shooting touch. Over the last three games, Perry is averaging 7.3 points per game and has made 7-of-11 from the field and 6-of-10 from behind the arc. Against Toledo scoring a career-high 10 points. Perry connected on 3-of-4 shooting, including two 3-pointers and an old-fashioned three-point play in just 13 minutes.

KP Notches Second Double-Double
Sophomore Kendrick Perry recorded his second career double-double with 18 points and 10 assists against Buffalo on Dec. 10. His first career double-double came against Wilberforce on Jan. 11, 2011,when he scored 13 points with 10 rebounds.

Ward Now Ranks 10th
With 15 3-pointers this season, senior Ashen Ward now ranks 10th all-time with 112 career 3-pointers. He needs two more to move into ninth and five more to move into eighth place.

Allen Has Chance For Record
Junior Blake Allen is challenging to set the YSU single-season 3-point field-goal percentage record. Allen is shooting at a 44.4 clip from behind the arc. The single-season mark was set by Andre Smith (45.9 percent) during the 1993-94 season.

Eargle Moves Into Second
Junior Damian Eargle has moved into second place on the YSU career blocks chart in just 41 games played. Eargle has 140 blocked shots. The only player ahead of Eargle is Ricky Tunstall, who recorded 221 career blocks. Counting his 57 blocks at UNC-Greensboro, Eargle has 197 blocked shots.

The 85 Percent
The Guins' offense has basically come from its five starters this season. Kendrick Perry, Blake Allen, Damian Eargle, Ashen Ward and DuShawn Brooks combine of an average of 57.7 points per game. As a team, the Guins are averaging 66.8 points per game, which translates into the starters scoring 85 percent of the team's points.

Brooks Named Player of the Week
Senior DuShawn Brooks was named the Horizon League Player of the Week for Dec. 5. Brooks averaged 20.5 points per game and shot 61.5 percent from the field and 64.3 percent from 3-point range. He scored a career-high 24 points against Detroit on Dec. 1 to lead the Guins to a 64-61 win. He also led the team with 17 points in a one-point loss to Wright State on Dec. 3. The last YSU player to earn the award was DeAndre Mays on Jan. 11, 2010.

Guins Setting Record Pace
The Guins have made 105 3-pointers in 11 games this season for an average of 9.5 3-pointers made per game. They are on pace to shatter the school's single-season mark of 235 set last year. If the Guins continue this pace over the next 19 guaranteed games, they will finish the season with 285 3-pointers made.

Last With 10 Assists
With 10 assists against Buffalo on Dec. 10, sophomore Kendrick Perry became the first player to accomplish the feat since DeAndre May did so against Valparaiso on Feb. 13, 2010.

Guins Set 3's Mark Again
For the third time this season, the Guins tied the school single-game record with 14 3-pointers made in a game against Buffalo on Dec. 10. The Guins tied the school single-game mark with 14 3-pointers game against Penn State on Nov. 23. and Notre Dame College on Nov. 15. The previous time YSU made 14 3 pointers in a game was against Butler on Jan. 9, 2011. Against the Bulls, the Guins also tied the school single-game mark for most 3-point field goals attempted with 35.

Brooks Had Career Day at Detroit
Senior DuShawn Brooks turned in a career-best performance with 24 points on 9-of-13 shooting from the floor, including 6-of-9 from 3-point range.

Eargle Third Nationally
Junior Damian Eargle continues to be a one of the top shot blockers in the country. Eargle currently ranks third nationally with 4.5 blocks per game. Last season, he finished the year ranked 10th in the country with 3.0 blocks per game.

Guins in the Nation
The Guins are represented well in the national statistics. Junior Blake Allen ranks eighth with 3.33-pointers made per game and 28th with a .444 3-point field-goal percentage. As a team, the Guins rank eighth nationally with 9.5 3-pointers made per game and 36th with a .378 3-point field-goal percentage

Eargle Block Machine
Junior Damian Eargle has tallied at least one block in every game this season. He has also recorded multiple blocks in 10 of 11 games and has posted at least three blocks nine times.

Allen, Perry Score 20
Junior Blake Allen and sophomore Kendrick Perry became the first duo to score at least 20 points in game since Vytas Sulskis (25) and Damian Eargle (24) accomplished the feat against Malone on Dec. 13, 2010. Allen scored 25 and Perry posted 23 against Penn State on Nov. 23.

Fewest Points In Win Since 2000
The Guins' 53 points in the victory over UC-Riverside are the fewest points scored in win since they defeated IUPUI, 43-41, on Jan. 6, 2000.

Eargle Just Missed Triple Double
Damian Eargle nearly missed becoming the first player in YSU history to record a triple-double of any variety. Eargle scored 11 points with 11 rebounds and a career-high eight blocks against UC-Riverside on Nov. 18.

Up Next
The Guins take a break for Christmas and return to Horizon League action when they visit Cleveland State, Saturday, Dec. 31. Tipoff is slated for 2 p.m. at the Wolstein Center.

Slocum In Elite Company
Youngstown State Head Coach Jerry Slocum is one of just 11 active Division I head coaches with at least 600 career victories. Slocum currently ranks sixth on that list with 644 career coaching victories.

Eargle Has Chance For 1,000
In under three seasons of playing college basketball, junior Damian Eargle has scored more than 700 points with 719. Eargle needs just 281 more points to reach 1,000 for his entire career, which includes 268 points during the 2008-09 season at UNC-Greensboro. Last season, Eargle ranked second on the squad with 339 points for an average of 11.3 points per game.

Perry Nets Career Scoring High
Sophomore Kendrick Perry scored a career-high 28 points on 9-of-17 shooting from the field to lead the Guins to a 76-69 win over Samford on Nov. 12. Perry's 28 points are the most points scored by a sophomore since Doug Underwood scored 28 against Green Bay on Jan. 29, 2003. He also made four 3-pointers with four assists and four steals.

Last to Score 30
With 30 points against Loyola on Jan. 9, 2010, DeAndre Mays set a career-high and became the first player to score at least 30 points since Keston Roberts scored 31 against Detroit on Feb. 27, 2007. Mays' performance was the 10th time under Jerry Slocum a player has scored at least 30 points in a game. YSU had just 10 30-point plus performances from Feb. 1988 to Dec. 2005.

Guins Sign Hain, Weber to NLIs
Youngstown State signed Bobby Hain (Jupiter, Fla.) and Ryan Weber (Indianapolis, Ind.) to National Letters-of-Intent during the early signing period. Hain, a 6-foot-9 forward from Jupiter High School, was named second-team all-conference as a junior after averaging 13.6 points, 6.8 rebounds and 1.1 blocks per game. Weber, a 6-foot-7 forward from Roncalli High School, helped lead his prep squad to an 18-6 overall mark and the school's fourth sectional championship in the last seven years. Weber averaged 11.8 points and 4.8 rebounds per game and was named Honorable Mention all-county.
