Youngstown State senior Ashen Ward (Cleveland, Ohio) concluded his Penguins career recently. Ward gave a speech at the Scholarship/Ring Dinner about his experience playing basketball at Youngstown State.
Ward finished his career with 828 points, 362 rebounds, 184 assists and 74 steals in 119 games played (73 starts). He knocked down 150 3-pointers in his four seasons, making 287 field goals and 122 free throws. Ward started 58 of the final 59 games he played in a Penguins uniform. He made more than 50 3-pointers in his junior and senior campaigns.
In 2011-12, he made a career-high 102 field goals, 54 free throws and 53 3-pointers. For the season he started all 30 games, scored 311 points, grabbed 146 rebounds, had 78 assists, 24 steals and five blocked shots. He scored in double figures on 15 occasions, highlighted by a season-best 22 points in a win over UIC. He also scored 21 points at home against Loyola and at Butler. He had a high of nine rebounds in YSU's win at Milwaukee.
