Penguins Begin Busy Stretch With Contest at Robert Morris

The Youngstown State men's basketball team plays the first of three games in seven days when the Penguins visit Robert Morris on Wednesday night. Tipoff at the Charles L. Sewell Center is set for 7 p.m.

The Penguins (3-4) play at RMU on Wednesday, play host to Oberlin on Saturday and head to Michigan State next Tuesday. The Colonials (2-5) enter tomorrow night's contest coming off of two straight victories and are playing their first home game since Nov. 11.

Last Time Out: The Penguins dropped a 90-84 contest to Canisius last Saturday at the Beeghly Center. YSU trimmed a 17-point second-half deficit down to four but couldn't complete the comeback in the loss to Canisius.

Francisco Santiago led the Penguins with 23 points and 11 assists as one of seven YSU players with at least eight points. YSU shot 53.2 percent from the field, but Canisius countered at 52.5 percent and outscored the Penguins by nine at the free-throw line. The Golden Griffins also scored 22 points on offensive rebounds.

Morse Among Nation's Leaders: Junior guard Cameron Morse ranks ninth in Division I with 23.7 points per game, and he is six in total points with 166. His 40-point effort at Toledo on Nov. 15 is the third-highest total this season. He scored 15 points on 6-of-20 shooting on Saturday against Canisius.

Robert Morris Series:

• This is the 17th meeting between Youngstown State and Robert Morris in a series that dates back to 1989.
• The Colonials own a 9-7 advantage in the all-time series, but the Penguins have won the last three contests.
• Last time at RMU, the Penguins won in Moon Township, 89-81 on Dec. 2, 2014.
• It marked the first win at Robert Morris since 2001.
• The Penguins won last year's meeting at the Beeghly Center, 65-58.

Last Year's Meeting: Matt Donlan scored 18 points as the Penguins defeated Robert Morris 65-58 on Dec. 2, 2015 at the Beeghly Center. Joining Donlan in double figures was Bobby Hain who had 14, Santiago had 12 and Brett Frantz added 10. YSU built a 49-36 lead with 13:06 remaining and kept the advantage at nine with 8:55 left. RMU scored the next six points to get within 56-53 with 4:54 left.

But the Guins defense stepped up and held the Colonials scoreless for the next 3:33. In the meantime, Hain made a pair of free throws, Jorden Kaufman snapped a nearly seven-minute field-goal drought with a putback at the 2:53 mark and Frantz made a hanger in the lane as the shot clock expired before RMU could score another point.

For the game, YSU shot 42.9 percent (24-of-56) while RMU made 21-of-53 shots (39.6 percent).

Next Game: Youngstown State returns home to play host to Oberlin at the Beeghly Center. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m.
