Men's Basketball Falls to Kent State, 111-78

Akron, Ohio -- The Youngstown State men's basketball team dropped a 111-78 decision to Kent State in the 2017-18 season opener at James A. Rhodes Arena.

The Penguins fall to 0-1 while the Golden Flashes improve to 1-0.

Senior Cameron Morse led the Penguins with 19 points while sophomore Braun Hartfield had 14 and junior Tyree Robinson added 10.

The Penguins and Golden Flashes fought through seven ties and seven lead changes in the first half before a layup by Morse put Youngstown State up three, 39-36, with 2:26 left in the half.

A three-point play by Kent State's Mitch Peterson tied the game at 39-39 before Hartfield's layup at the 1:03 mark put YSU up for the final time, 41-39.

Kent State closed out the half on a 7-0 run to take a 46-41 lead into the lockerroom at halftime, and opened the second half with a 10-2 run to extend its lead to 56-43 at the 17:24 mark.

For the game, Kent State shot 57.4 percent from the field, including 68.4 percent in the second half, while the Penguins converted just 38 percent from the floor.

Youngstown State hosts Franciscan in the 2017-18 home opener, Tuesday, Nov. 14, at 7:35 p.m.
