Men's Basketball Begins Calhoun Era Against Kent State Saturday

• The Penguins return three starters and six letterwinners from last year's team that advanced to the Horizon League Semifinals.
• First-year Head Coach Jerrod Calhoun became the program's 13th head coach on March 28, 2017.
• Senior guard Cameron Morse needs just 579 more points to become the third player in program history to record 2,000 points in a career.
• Morse, a two-time All-Horizon League selection, also needs 571 points to become YSU's Division all-time leading scorer.
• Senior guard Francisco Santiago ranked second in the Horizon League in assists (158), assists per game (4.6), steals per game (1.4) and assist-to-turnover ratio (2.2). He also averaged 11.6 points and 5.2 rebounds per game.
• Junior Devin Haygood led the Penguins and ranked fourth in the league with 35 blocked shots.

Game Preview
• The Youngstown State men's basketball team opens its 88th season against Kent State, Saturday, Nov. 11, as part of the Northeast Ohio Coaches vs. Cancer Doubleheader hosted by the University of Akron. 
• Tipoff is at 9 p.m. at James A. Rhodes Arena in Akron, Ohio, and the game will be broadcast on 570-AM WKBN and ESPN3.

• Senior Cameron Morse has scored 1,421 career points and needs 579 points to become the third player in school history to score 2,000 career points.

• Last season, Morse scored 711 points and had 608 as a sophomore.
 
Santiago Ranked High In HL
• Senior guard Francisco Santiago ranked second in the Horizon League in assists (158), assists per game (4.6), steals per game (1.4) and assist-to-turnover ratio (2.2). He also averaged 11.6 points and 5.2 rebounds per game.
• He also averaged 11.6 points and 5.2 rebounds per game last season.
• His 158 assists were the eighth most all-time and the third-highest total in YSU's Division I history.
• He has a total of 297 career assists, which rank ninth all-time, and he needs three more to become just the ninth player in school history to record at least 300 assists in a career.
 
Hartfield Posted Solid Rookie Campaign
• Sophomore Braun Hartfield turned in a solid freshman campaign for the Penguins averaging 8.5 points and 4.8 rebounds per game.
• Hartfield also shot 45.7 percent from the field and averaged 10.7 points per game against Horizon League opponents.
• Eight of his double-figure scoring games came against Horizon League opponents.
• He scored a career-high 22 points against Cleveland State in the first round of the 2017 Horizon League Championship on March 3. 
 
Last Time vs. Kent State
• In the last meeting against Kent State, the Golden Flashes escaped with a 79-70 win on their home court in 2015.
Francisco Santiago had six points, six rebounds and eight assists while Cameron Morse came off the bench and added eight points with five steals.
 
Kent State Connections
• Youngstown State Associate Head Coach Bobby Steinburg is no stranger to the Golden Flashes.
• Steinburg joined Youngstown State in 2017 after spending nine seasons as an assistant coach at Kent State. 
 
Morse Named to Lou Henson Award Preseason Watch List
• Senior has been named to the 2017-18 Lou Henson Award Watch List.
• The Lou Henson Award is presented annually to the nation's top Division I mid-major player.
• Morse is one of four Horizon League players on the list.
 
Morse Climbing 1,000-Point Chart
• Last season, senior Cameron Morse became the 37th player in school history to reach 1,000 career points when he scored 13 against Northern Kentucky on Jan. 5, 2017.
• Morse now ranks 15th all-time with 1,421 career points.
• Morse was also the eighth YSU player to score 1,000 career points since 2005.
 
Hartfield Hits Career Highs
• Sophomore Braun Hartfield posted a pair of career highs against Cleveland State on March 3 in the first round of the Horizon League Tournament.
• He scored a career-high 22 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the floor and had a career-best five 3-pointers.
• It marked the first time since 2013 that a YSU freshman scored at least 20 points in a game.
 
200, 2K Streaks
• The Penguins continued a pair of impressive streaks last season.
• The Penguins reached 200 made 3s in a season for the seventh straight season.
• YSU had 250 3-pointers this season and the school record is 270 set in 2011-12.
• The Penguins also extended their 2,000 points in a season streak to eight straight years.
• YSU scored 2,616 last season and broke the mark of 2,461, which tied the school mark set in 2013-14.
