Covington, Morse Lead Men's Basketball Past Westminster, 91-83

Youngstown State shot 55 percent in the second half and four players scored in double figures to en route to a 91-83 win over Westminster on Tuesday night at the Beeghly Center.

The Penguins improve to 2-2 overall while the Titans suffered their first loss of the year and fall to 3-1.

Senior Cameron Morse and freshman Garrett Covington each scored 18 points to lead the Penguins while sophomore Braun Hartfield had 12 and junior Devin Haygood recorded the first double-double of his career with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Westminster's Cameron Kane-Johnson led all scorers with 30 points while Deontay Scott had 18 points and 10 rebounds. Jarrett Vrabel scoredc 14 points and Austin Armwood added 10.

The Penguins and Titans played through 10 lead changes and seven ties before YSU overtook the Titans for good midway through the second half.

Westminster led the Penguins by eight at the intermission, but the Penguins cut the deficit to four 54-50 after a 3-pointer by Morse at the 16:59 mark. The Titans pushed the lead back to seven, 59-52, but the Penguins went on an 8-1 run to take their first lead of the second, 61-60, with 13:10 remaining.

A four layups and a free throw by Covington, who had 14 points in the second half, sparked a 15-5 run over a five minute span pushed the YSU lead to eight, 78-70, with 5:54 to go.

A dunk by Haygood and a layup by Michael Akuchie pushed the Penguins lead to 12 and a Covington's layup with 1:04 left gave the Penguins their largest lead of the game, 91-78. 

In the first half, Westminster, which led for more than 10 minutes, shot 52.6 percent from the field and made six 3-pointers. The Titans used a 22-5 run late in the half to erase a six-point deficit, 33-27, and take an 11-point lead, 49-38, with 36 seconds left.

Ryan Strollo, who had three 3-pointers in the first half, drained his third of the half to cut the Penguins deficit to eight, 49-41, at the half.

Youngstown State shot just 38.9 percent from the floor in the first half and committed 12 turnovers.

Youngstown State takes on Northern Colorado, Friday, Nov. 24, in the Sanford Pentagon Showcase in Sioux Falls, S.D. Tipoff is slated for 9 p.m. EDT.
