Five players scored in double figures led by Donel Cathcart III's 18 points as the Youngstown State men's basketball team defeated Westminster, 104-66, on Wednesday evening at the Beeghly Center.
The Penguins improve to 3-4 overall while the Titans fall to 1-3.
Cathcart connected on 6-of-12 shooting from the field, made a pair of 3-pointers and went 4-for-4 from the free-throw line. Sophomore Garrett Covington poured in 14 points while freshmen Darius Quisenberry and Jelani Simmons each had 13 points and junior Kendale Hampton added 10 points. Quisenberry also dished out five assists with three rebounds and two steals.
The Penguins led the enitre game and shot 50.6 percent from the floor overall while making 12 3-pointers. In total, 15 players scored for the Penguins and they posted 40 points in the paint, had 27 points off of 23 Westminster turnovers, scored 29 fastbreak points and had 53 bench points.
Westminster was led by Austin Armwood with 15 points and Dylan O'Hara with 13 points.
The Penguins jumped out to a quick 15-6 lead following a 3-pointer from Olamide Pedersen that forced a Titan timeout. Coming out of the timeout, Westminster scored seven straight points to trim the deficit to two, 15-13, with 13:40 to go in the first half.
Quisenberry scored seve of the Penguins next 14 points to spark a 14-2 run midway through the half. The Penguins pushed their lead to as many as 19, 43-24, when Covington converted a pair of free throws and hit a 3-pointer with 6:16 left.
The Penguins led 52-36 at halftime. In the second half, YSU forced 13 Westminster turnouvers and allowed just 30 Titan points. Westminster shot just 25.8 percent from the floor after haltime while the Penguins connect on 50 percent from the floor and made six 3-pointers.
