Highland, Mich. -- The Youngstown State men's golf team had a strong showing at the Detroit Titans Invitational placing third out of 12 teams. YSU finished with a three-round total of 899 at the event held at the Prestwick Village Golf Club.
Detroit won its own event finishing with an impressive three-round total of 872 to win by 19 strokes over Cleveland State. CSU finished with an 891 while YSU was third at 899, Valparaiso was fourth at 906.
The Penguins grabbed the lead following the early round on Friday with a 287. At that point, YSU was two shots in front of Detroit with a 289. The Titans rebounded with a 296 while the Guins slipped eight strokes back with a 306 for a total of 593 following Friday's rounds. Cleveland State was seven behind the Penguins but tied the Guins following a 299 in the second round. On Saturday, the Guins also carded a 306.
Bryan Yeo was the Penguins' top finisher tying for 10th place. Yeo was the first-round leader with a 69 before dropping to fourth following the second round with a 73. Yeo carded a 78 on Saturday to tie for 10th with a 220.
Mark Olbrych, who was tied for second with an opening round 70, finished tied for 12th with 221. Olbrych had a second-round score of 77 and third-round 74.
Brandon Pluchinsky had a strong performance to place 20th at 227. Pluchinsky had round of 73 and 78 on Friday and carded a 76 on Saturday.
Competing as an individual, Trevor Jones finished with a three-round total of 233. Jones had rounds of 78, 75 and 80 in the tournament. Bill Gaffney was 39th with a three-round score of 236. Gaffney had rounds of 75, 80 and 81 in the event. D.J. Holub was 47th with a 238.
The Penguins return to action at the Frank Rutherford Intercollegiate hosted by Penn State on April 20-21.
