Pluchinsky's 66 Sparks Penguins Run at Horizon League Championships

Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla. - Youngstown State freshman Brandon Pluchinsky fired a Horizon League record-tying round of 66 on Sunday during the final round of the league event. 

His solid round helped lead the Penguins to a final round 290 and a 911 for the tournament. The Guins made a charge to make a move in the standings, but ended up sixth. Green Bay was one shot in front of the Guins with a 910. Valpariso won its first Horizon League title with an 884 while Cleveland State was second with an 888. Detroit was third with a 901 while Loyola was fourth at 906.

The 290 was the Guins' lowest of the tournament by far. YSU had a 312 on Friday and a 309 on Saturday. 

Pluchinsky's Horizon League Championships tying-record round featured nine birdies, seven pars, a bogey and a double-bogey. In fact through his first five holes on Sunday he was two-over par with a score of 22.

He played the final 13 holes in an amazing 44 strokes. Pluchinsky birdied six, eight and nine for a one-under par 34. On the back nine, he bogeyed 10 and had pars at 11 and 12. He concluded his round by birding the six holes playing them in 17 shots.

Pluchinsky had two birdies the first two rounds, ironically both came on hole No. 10, a hole he bogeyed on Sunday. He was nine-over par on Friday and six-over on Saturday.

The other HL golfers to card a round of 66 in the event's 33-year history are Oral Roberts' Bryan Norton (1980), Oral Roberts' Jim Kane (1980) and Wright State's Billy Day (2000).

Bryan Yeo had his best round of the event finishing with a 73. Yeo had two bogeys, a birdie and 15 pars in his final round and finished with a total of 229 for the event. His round was seven shots better then his second round total. 

D.J. Holub also had a 73 on Sunday and finished with a 229 for the event. In his final round, Holub had four bogeys, three birdies and 11 pars. It was also his best round of the event after an 80 and 76.

Bill Gaffney finished the Horizon League Championships with a round of 78 and a three-round total of 230. On Sunday, he had a one-over 36 on the front nine with two birdies, a bogey and a double bogey. On the back nine, had had a five-over par 42.

Mark Olbrych ended the Championships with a 78 and a three-round total of 237. He had an up-and-down round on Sunday with four birdies, six bogeys, a quadruple bogey and seven pars. He had rounds of 79 and 80 in earlier rounds.
