Howey-In-The-Hills, Fla. - The Youngstown State men's golf team carded an opening-round score of 305 on Friday at the Horizon League Championships at the Mission Inn Resort. YSU trails leader Cleveland State by five shots and second-place Detroit by two.
After round one, the Guins have four of their five golfers in the top 15. Brandon Pluchinsky leads the way in fourth place with a 74, D.J. Holub is sixth following a 75, Mark Olbrych and Bryan Yeo are tied for 15th after opening rounds of 78 while Bill Gaffney carded an 80 and sits in a tie for 24th.
Pluchinsky, who carded a 66 last time out at Mission Inn, birdied two of his first six holes on Friday. He was four-over par his final 12 holes to card a two-over par round.
Holub had birdie on 14 to go with four bogeys and is three-over par after round one. Olbrych bounced back nicely after a tough opening nine holes that saw him go six-over par to go even on the back nine with a birdie, bogey and seven pars. He birdied hole No. 16. Yeo was three over on the front side and three-over on the back nine. His round was highlighted by a biride on No. 15.
Gaffney had two birdies, eight bogeys, a double bogey and seven pars for his round. After a six-over par start on the front nine, he rebounded to go two-over on the back nine
Other schools in the team standings are Valparaiso is fourth at 309, Green Bay fifth at 311, Wright State sixth with a 313 and Oakland sits seventh with a 328.
The second round will be held on Saturday starting at approximately 8:30 a.m.
