Primm, Nevada - The Youngstown State men's golf team made a surge on Tuesday to place fifth out of a strong 15-team field at the SDSU Jackrabbit Invitational which concluded at the Primm Valley Golf Course.
YSU carded a third-round total of 302, which was the third-lowest team score on Tuesday, to move up from eighth after the second round to place fifth with an 899, just one shot out of fourth place behind Utah State. UNLV won the tournament with a three-round 845. In the third round, only the Runnin' Rebels and Utah Valley had better rounds than the Penguins.
The Guins opened play on Monday with a 301 and a 296. On Tuesday, scores soared, but YSU was steady and moved up the leaderboard.
The top individual finisher for YSU was D.J. Holub who placed 17th with a 223. Holub had rounds of 75, 73 and 75 in the tournament. Bill Gaffney was right behind Holub finishing 18th with a 224. Gaffney posted rounds of 75, 72 and 77. Other finishers for the Guins were Brandon Pluchinsky who was 32nd with a 227 (75-79-73), Trevor Jones who finished 46th with a 231 (76-72-83) and Bryan Yeo was 48th with a 232 (76-79-77). Mark Olbrych competed as an individual and was 39th with a 229 (78-74-77).
The Penguins are next in action at the Villanova Wildcat Invitational on March 31-April 1.
