University Park, Pa. - The Youngstown State men's golf team posted an eighth-place finish in a strong field at the Rutherford Invitational hosted by Penn State. The 54-hole event concluded on Sunday at the PSU Blue Golf Course
The Penguins were fifth after the opening round and following the second round were tied with Bowling Green at 583 for fifth. YSU started out Sunday with a solid front nine, before dropping some strokes on the back nine and falling off the pace to come in eighth.
For the event, YSU had a three-round total of 885 and tied the Nittany Lions in the event. Minnesota was the wire-to-wire winner with a three-round score of 860. In the tournament, YSU placed ahead of Army, Binghamton, Wright State, Xavier and LaSalle. Army was in third place following the second round before falling back.
The Guins finished one shot out of seventh place and four back of sixth. YSU was nine shots from cracking the top three following Sunday's 302. YSU had scores of 293 and 290.
Individually, D.J. Holub was 11th with a three-round total of 218 following rounds of 70, 73 and 75. Bill Gaffney placed 19th carding a 220 with scores of 75, 72 and 73. Bryan Yeo finished tied for 46th with a 226 (74-72-80), Mark Olbrych was 49th with a 227 (74-73-80) and Brandon Pluchinsky posted a score of 234 to finish 67th following rounds of 78, 82 and 74.
Holub was one-under par for his Sunday round after two birdies and bogey, but was five-over on the back nine falling back in the pack. He was even par through 11 holes and just one over after 12. As group, YSU was a strong plus-five after the first nine holes in the final round but was 17-over during the back nine.
In shooting his opening round 70, Holub had a one-under par score which featured two birdies and just one bogey. He posted eight birdies during the tournament. In his second round he was one-under par on the back nine to finish with a 73.
Olbrych had three birdies and was two-under par on the front nine and one under through 15 during his second round before finishing with a two-over par 73. Also in the second round, Yeo was one under through 13 holes, but two bogeys left him with a one-over 72.
Gaffney was one-under par through 16 holes in his third round before carding a two-over par 73. For his second round, he had two bogeys and one birdie to card a 72.
YSU will look to continue a strong month of performances at the Horizon League Championships beginning on Friday. The three-day event is being held once again at the Mission Inn Resort in Howey-In-The-Hills, Fla.
