Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla. - The Youngstown State men's golf team is in fourth place after the second round on Saturday at the Horizon League Championships at the Mission Inn Resort. Junior Steven Sveda is in fourth place in the individual standings.
The Penguins carded a second-round score of 303, a five stroke improvement from their first round 308 on Friday. YSU's total of 611 leaves it in fourth place behind Cleveland State (582), Oakland (589) and Wright State (602).
Sveda had his second straight even-par round of 72 on Saturday and has a 144 through 36 holes. Leading the field is Oakland's Jake Kneen at 141 while Cleveland State's Joey Krecic and Wright State's Ryan Wenzler are second with 142.
Sveda opened the day with a birdie four at the par-5 first before recording 16 consecutive pars. His round ended with a bogey five at the par-4 18th.
Senior Brandon Pluchinsky sits in 17th place after a second-round 77. Pluchinsky has a 153 for the tournament. On Saturday he had 10 pars, five bogeys, two birdies and a double bogey. He had birdies on back-to-back holes on Nos. 4 and 5 to highlight his round.
Moving up six spots was senior D.J. Holub who carded a second-round 74, a seven-shot improvement from an opening round 81. He is tied for 21st with a 155. On Saturday he had eight pars, six bogeys and four birdies. Holub opened his round strong with birdies at No. 1 and No. 4 and was two-under par through six holes. He was also one-under par on his final six holes.
The final round of the HL Championships is set for Sunday morning.
