Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla. - Youngstown State's Steven Sveda and Brandon Pluchinsky finished in the top eight at the Horizon League Men's Golf Championships which concluded on Sunday at the Mission Inn Resort.
In the team race, the Penguins ended with their best round of the tournament carding a 294. It was the second best round of the day. YSU finished fourth with a total of 905. Cleveland State held off Oakland and Wright State to win with a 882. Oakland was second with an 890 while Wright State was third with an 891.
Sveda had a final round 76 and ended up placing sixth with a 220. On Sunday, he had 10 pars, six bogeys and a pair of birdies. He birdied hole No. 1 and No. 17 during his four-over par round.
Pluchinsky finished in the top 11 in all four of his Horizon League Championship appearances by placing eighth. He had is best round of this year's event on Sunday posting a two-under par 70. He was one-over par on the front side with a 36 before posting a three-under score on the back nine. He had birdies at No. 2, No. 10, No. 12, No. 13 and No. 14 to move into the top 10.
Senior Bill Gaffney ended his YSU career with a one-under par 71 on Sunday and finished 23rd. Gaffney had 13 pars, three birdies and two bogeys in his round. He had birdies on No. 4, No. 5 and No. 14. For the tournament he finished 23rd with a 233.
Senior D.J. Holub had a final round 79 and finished with a 234 for the Championships finishing 25th. Holub had two birdies and put together eight straight pars on his final round as a Penguin.
Redshirt freshman Jason McQuown finished 30th with a 237. McQuown closed out his first Horizon League event with a low-round of 77 on the final day. He had two birdies and was even par for the final 12 holes.
