Penguins Have Strong Performance at Hoosier Invitational

Bloomington, Ind. - The Youngstown State men's golf team placed sixth out of 15 teams in a strong field at the Hoosier Invitational which concluded on Sunday afternoon. YSU had a two-round total of 599.

YSU was in eighth place following an opening-round 303 on Saturday before carding a 296 on Sunday. The tournament was schedule for three rounds, but high winds on Saturday cancelled the second round. Western Illinois won with a 578 while Illinois State was second with a 585. 

The Penguins finished ahead of Horizon League members Oakland (602) and Detroit (604) at the tournament.

Leading the way once again was senior Brandon Pluchinsky who placed sixth with a two-round 144 (72-72). Pluchinsky tied Indiana's Andrew Havill for sixth as the duo finished behind five golfers who tied for first with a 140.

Senior Bill Gaffney and redshirt freshman Jason McQuown tied for 26th after both carded scores of 150. Gaffney fired a 72 on Sunday following an opening round 78. McQuown had rounds of 73 and 77.

D.J. Holub was 48th with a 155 (80-75) and Steven Sveda 159 (80-79) to place 59th.

YSU is next in action on April 11-12 at The Greenbrier Collegiate Invitational in White Sulphur Springs, W. Va.
