Brandon Pluchinsky finished sixth in the men's field, and Emily Dixon and Courtney Shutt tied for eighth in the women's field as the Youngstown State golf teams opened their spring seasons at the Jackrabbit Invitational at the Primm Valley Golf Course in Primm, Nev.
Pluchinsky carded a three-round score of 217 on the par-72 course to finish one-over par for the tournament. The senior's best round came in the final round when he was minus-2. He helped the Penguins tie for sixth in the nine-team field.
In addition to Pluchinsky, Steven Sveda and Justin Hallapy finished in a tie for 21st at plus-6. Denny Holub was four-under in the second round and finished nine-over for the tournament to place 34th, and Bill Gaffney and Jason McQuown were both 10-over in 36th place. Thomas Lydic shot a five-over 77 in all three rounds to finish in a tie for 48th.
Dixon and Shutt were both 16-over par with a three-round total of 232, and Gabrielle Minor was two shots back to place 12th. Minor had YSU's best round of the tournament, a three-over score of 75 in the first round. Megan Creager was 17th with a 246, and Christina Cooper finished with a 261.
The YSU men's golf team will compete at the Southern Intercollegiate at the University of Georgia on Monday, and the women's team will be back in action at the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate in Tennessee in two weeks.
