Huntington, W. Va. - The Youngstown State men's golf team carded the second-lowest final round of the tournament at the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational which concluded on Tuesday at the Cuyan Golf & Country Club.
The Penguins finished the tournament in fifth place with an 855 following rounds of 290 and 289 on Monday and an impressive eight-under par 276 on Tuesday. Winning the event was Belmont by one shot over Bowling Green. The Falcons were the only squad out of 16 to card a round lower than the Penguins on Tuesday.
Leading the way for YSU on Tuesday were Brandon Pluchinsky and Bill Gaffney. Both golfers carded four-under par 67's. Pluchinsky had birdies on one, three, six, 10 and 12 on Tuesday while Gaffney had birdies on one, six, 11, 12 and 14.
Pluchinsky tied for 10th with a five-under par three-round total of 208. He had rounds of 70, 71 and 68 at the event.
Gaffney finished tied for 28th with a three-round one-over par total of 214. He had scores of 75, 72 and 67 at the tournament. Steven Sveda shot a two-under par 69 on Tuesday to place 41st at the event with a 216. On Monday, he had rounds of 76 and 71.
Other finishers for the Penguins included D.J. Holub who was 54th with a 218 (69-75-74) and Thomas Lydic who placed 80th with a 224 (77-75-72). Justin Hallapy placed 85th with a 225 playing as an individual. Hallapy had a second-round 68 to highlight his performance.
YSU returns to action on Sept. 27-28 when it competes at the Northern Kentucky Collegiate Classic.
