Athens, Ga. - The Youngstown State men's golf team had a strong showing against a deep field on a chilly Monday at the Athens Country Club. YSU played 36 holes against an 15-team field, six of which are ranked in the top 45.
The Penguins had a two-round total of 622. YSU opened with a round of 316 before carding a 306 in the second round. The Guins placed 13th in the tournament as 43rd-ranked Lipscomb took first with a 564 and No. 30 Florida State was second at 567. Also competing in the tournament were No. 13 Oklahoma, 19th-ranked Georgia, No. 24 Arkansas and No. 44 Kennesaw State.
During the second round, YSU carded four eagles - three on No. 10 and one No. 6. Carding a three on hole No. 6 was Justin Hallapy. The trio to finish with eagles on No. 10 were Steven Sveda, Jason McQuown and Thomas Lydic.
Individually, Sveda was the top Penguin finisher placing 52nd with a two-round 152. Sveda had a 78 in the opening round before firing a second-round 74. Lydic finished 70th with a 157. After opening with an 82 in the morning he was seven shots lower in the second round with a 75. McQuown was 71st carding a pair of 79s to finish with a 158.
Hallapy and Evan Standohar both tied for 74th with 159's. Hallapy had rounds of 81 and 78 while Standohar had rounds of 78 and 81.
The Guins are next in action on March 19-21 at the Kingsmill Intercollegiate in Williamsburg, Va.
