Scherr In Second Place After First Round at HL Championships

Howey-In-The-Hills, Fla. - YSU freshman men's golfer Kevin Scherr is in second place after an opening round 73 on the first day of competition at the Horizon League Championships at the El Campeon Golf Course.

Scherr, IUPUI's Nick Bienz and Wright State's Chris Rossi and Bryce Haney sit in second four strokes behind Northern Kentucky's Jacob Poore who had a two-under-par 69 on Sunday.

In the team standings, the Penguins are seventh following a first round 311. They are just eight strokes back of second place Cleveland State as teams two through eight are separated by just eight shots. Wright State has the first round lead following a 297.

In his Horizon League Championships debut, Scherr carded a two-over par round that featured 11 pars, three birdies, three bogeys and just one double bogey. He had birdies on No. 2, No. 8 and 17. He played the back nine even par (36) and was one-under his final 11 holes. He had a string of six straight birdies from holes 11 through 16.

Junior Jason McQuown carded a 77 and is tied for 15th place. McQuown had an ever-par 36 on the final holes after shooting a 41 on the front side. In his final 10 holes, he was one-under par and had just 39 shots after having 38 his first eight. He had birdies at No. 9 and No. 16 to go along with 10 pars for the round.

Freshman Ken Keller also finished strong to score a 79 and is tied for 23rd place. Keller also carded a 36 on the back nine with seven pars, a birdie and a bogey. He was one-under par for his final 10 holes and had 39 strokes during that time after having a 40 through eight holes.

Senior Justin Hallapy is tied for 34th place following an opening round 82. After a rocky start with 17 shots through three holes, he settled in to go two over par on the remainder of the front nine. On the back nine he had four pars, three bogeys, a birdie and a double bogey. He ended his round with a birdie at No. 18.

Freshman C.J. Hughes is tied for 38th following an opening 86. Hughes had seven pars and a birdie at No. 8 to highlight his round. 

The second round gets underway on Monday with YSU teeing off at 7:30 a.m. The Guins will be paired with Detroit Mercy.
