Howey-In-The-Hills, Fla. - Freshman YSU golfer Kevin Scherr resides in fifth place following the first two rounds of play at the Horizon League Championships held at the El Campeon Golf Course.
Scherr carded a second-round 75 on Monday and through two rounds has a total of 148. He is eight shots behind the leader, Northern Kentucky's Jacob Poore. Scherr is just two strokes behind second-place golfers Oakland's Jake Kneen and IUPUI's Nick Bienz and one behind Cleveland State's Anton Krecic.
In the team race, the Guins moved up to sixth place with a team score of 314 on Monday. After two rounds, the Penguins have a team score of 625. YSU is one shot ahead of Green Bay and three in front of Detroit Mercy entering the final round tomorrow. Leading the tournament is Cleveland State with a 595. The Vikings are 11 shots in front of Wright State following an impressive 292 on Monday.
Scherr, who had a first-round 73 on Sunday, had another strong peformance on Monday. For his round he had 10 pars, three birdies, four bogeys and one other. He birdied holes nine, 10 and 18 on his round. He played the last 11 holes at one-under par with three birdies and two bogeys.
Junior Jason McQuown is tied for 24th place with a two-round total of 158. He shot an 81 during the second that featured three birdies - No. 4, No. 10 and No. 16.
Senior Justin Hallapy is in 33rd place with a two-round total of 162. Hallapy carded an 80 on his second round. Freshman C.J. Hughes is one spot behind Hallapy with a two-round total of 164. Hughes shot a 78 for his second round, which was a six-shot improvement over his first round. Hughes was three-over par on his final 11 holes and had seven pars and two bogeys on the back nine. His round was highlighted, by a birdie on the par-3 second hole.
The Penguins will tee off at 8:20 a.m. on Tuesday.
