Highland, Mich. - The Youngstown State men's golf team finished their fall season in strong fashion on Tuesday with a second-place finish in the Titans Motown Collegiate at Prestwick Village Golf Club. As a team, the Penguins turned in a season-best, three-round total score of 893. The performance featured rounds of 297, 298 and 298 respectively.
YSU sat atop the leaderboard with a two-shot lead on Robert Morris after two rounds of play on Monday. The Colonials were seven strokes better than the Penguins in the final round on Tuesday to earn the victory by five strokes with a three-round 888.
Tony Joy's squad had a number of strong individual performances as three YSU golfers finished in the top-10.
C.J. Hughes led the charge with a three-round 220 (75-74-71) on the par-72 course to earn a career-best, third-place finish. The freshman's third-round 71 matched his best round of the season and was tied for the lowest single-round score of the entire event. His total of 220 is the team's best three-round score of the 2017-18 campagin to this point. Hughes now has two top-10 finishes on the season and has been YSU's top finisher in three straight events.
Kevin Scherr had another strong performance with a three-round 223 (72-78-73) to finish seventh. The freshman's first-round 72 was the Penguin's lowest score of the round, matched his best of the season and featured his second eagle of the year. His 223 is the team's second-best, three-round total score of the season thus far. Scherr's seventh place finish is the best of his young career and his second in the top-20 this fall.
Jason McQuown turned in his best three-round performance of the season with a 224 (77-73-74) to earn a career-best, eighth-place finish. The junior's second-round 73 on Monday was his lowest so far this season and the team's best score of the round.
Justin Hallapy finished in a tie for 19th with a season-best, three-round score of 229 (75-74-80). The senior was tied for sixth after the first two rounds on Monday. Hallapy now has two top-20 finishes so far this season.
Ken Keller earned a career-best, 24th-place finish with a three-round 233 (75-77-81). The freshman's total of 233 ranks as his best three-round performance of the season. Hughes, Keller, and Scherr were competing in just the sixth event of their collegiate careers.
Competing as an individual, Justin Stark carded a three-round 239 (79-78-82) to finish 31st. The freshman was participating in just the second event of his collegiate career.
David Szymanski of Robert Morris earned medalist honors by three strokes with a three-round 216 to finish at even par.
The Penguins are currently scheduled to begin their spring season on March 9 and 10 with the Jackrabbit Invitational hosted by South Dakota State in Boulder City, Nev.
