The Youngstown State men's golf team was one of just 25 Division I programs in the nation to receive President's Special Recognition for posting a team GPA of 3.5 or better when the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) announced its 18Birdies Team Academic Awards this week.
YSU was one of five Horizon League men's golf programs which earned 18Birdies All-Academic Team recognition, joining Detroit Mercy, IUPUI, Oakland and Wright State. To qualify, teams must post a grade point average (GPA) of 3.00 or higher, using the GPA of each golfer on the team's official squad list for the academic year. The Penguins were the only team from the league to receive President's Special Recognition.
The team posted a 3.61 GPA for the fall semester, the highest of all men's programs at YSU, and all nine student-athletes recorded at least a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or higher.
Dominic Carano, Justin Hallapy, Jason McQuown, Evan Standohar and Justin Stark were each recognized on the Horizon League Fall 2017 Academic Honor Roll. Carano, Hallapy, McQuown and Standohar were also recently named to the league's Spring 2018 Academic Honor Roll.
