Kabli Wins Consolation Title; YSU Wins 20 Matches at Louisville Invitational

Louisville, Ky. -- The Youngstown State men's tennis team had a strong showing at the Louisville Invitational that took place throughout the weekend. YSU won 20 combined matches between doubles and singles play in an event that featured 13 schools.

Sophomore Dawoud Kabli lead the Penguins by winnig the consolation draw of Flight "A" singles. 

Kabli dropped his first match before winning four consecutive matches in the consolation bracket. He won 6-4 6-3 against Chicago State's Mario Noboa and won the finals 6-3 6-2 against Murray State's Tyler Jefers.

Sebastian Hagn advanced to the quarterfinals in the Flight "A" singles with a 1-6, 6-2, 6-4 win over Louisville's Colton Buffington and a 6-4 6-3 win over Murray State's Adam Taylor. Hagn lost in the quarters 6-3, 6-1 to Austin Peay's Sean Bailey. Silviu Mistreanu won his first match before being knocked out of the flight.

In the Flight "B" consolation, Max Schmerin advanced to the finals before losing. He dropped a tough three-set match to open the tournament before winning his next three in the consolation round. In the final, he lost a tough 2-6, 6-2, 10-8 battle to Ausint Peay's Vasily Eremeev.

In Flight "B" Zeeshan Ismail won his first two matches before falling in the quarterfinals. Victor Theorin won his first match in the flight before losing.

Mistreanu and Ismail made it to the quarterfinals in Flight "B" doubles with an 8-2 first round win. Rodrigo Campos and Theorin also advanced to the quarterfinals with an 8-2 victory. In the Flight "C" doubles Felipe Rosa and Schmerin made it to the quarter finals with 8-4.

The Penguins altogether advanced three times to the second round in the singles while Kabli and Hagn proceeded to the second round in the doubles consolation game in Flight "A" with 8-2.

YSU returns to action on Sept. 28-30 when it plays in the Penn Invitational.
