YSU Men's Tennis Opens Fall Slate at River Forest Tournament

River Forest, Ill. - The Youngstown State men's tennis team opened their fall slate playing on outdoor clay courts at the annual fall River Forest Tournament.

Rodrigo Campos advanced to the championship match at No. 4 singles to lead the Penguins. As a group, YSU won 13 singles matches and eight doubles matches during the event which was held on Friday and Saturday. Each YSU player won at least two singles matches.

Campos won 7-5, 7-5 over Butler's Andres Maynez before defeating Andrew Cobos of IPFW 6-4, 6-2. In the championship match, Campos dropped a 6-0, 6-1 decision to Northern Illinois' Siron Forront.

At No. 1 singles, Silviu Mistreanu dropped his first match before winning his final two matches. In the consolation final he came from behind to beat Grand Valley State's Francis Bertrand 4-6, 6-2, 14-12.

At No. 2 singles, Penguins Dawoud Kabli and Zeeshan Ismail won their initial matches before falling in the semifinals. In the semis, Ismail dropped a touch 6-2, 5-7, 10-5 decision to Butler's Pulok Bhattacharya. Ismail and Kabli wound up playing each other in their final match. Ismail won 6-2, 6-3.

At No. 3 singles, Max Schmerin won his first round match beating IPFW's Alfonso Costas 7-5, 6-2. Schmerin dropped a 6-1, 6-2 decision in the semifinals to Jovan Zeljkovic from NIU. In his final match Schmerin won 6-2, 2-6, 10-2 over Tommy Marx from Butler.

At No. 5 singles, Victor Theorin won his first match 6-2, 7-5 over Grand Valley State's Ben Esh-Nauta. Theorin lost in the semifinals before winning his final match.

At No. 6 singles, Felipe Rosa  won his first match before falling 6-1, 1-6, 13-11 in the semifinals to UICs' Rahul Kamath. Rosa won his final match 6-2, 6-2.

In doubles play, Mistreanu and Ismail won two matches at No. 1 doubles to finish third. After dropping their first match, Schmerin and Rosa rebounded to win their final two at No. 3. In action at No. 2, Theorin and Campos won twice after dropping their opening match while Kabli and newcomer Sebastian Hagn won their first match and placed third.

The club was founded in 1905 and was home of U.S. National Clay Court Championships 20 times between 1936 and 1965. American tennis legends Arthur Ashe and Jimmy Connors are some of the famous names to have graced the courts of River Forest.
