Boardman - The Youngstown State men's tennis team dropped a tough 4-3 contest to Detroit on Saturday afternoon at the Boardman Tennis Center.
The Penguins (15-7 overall and 3-2 in the Horizon League) were going for a school single-season win mark but came up short to UDM (7-11 and 1-1). The Titans also stopped the Guins' three-match win streak.
Detroit put the Guins in 1-0 hole winning two of three matches to earn the doubles point. YSU was victorious at No. 2 at Joao Garretto and Danylo Veremeichuk picked up a 6-1 win, but UDM won 6-3 and No. 1 and 6-2 at No. 3 to claim the point.
YSU won at No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles. Winning at No. 4 was Thomas Rodrigues by a 6-4, 6-4 score over Kacper Stekmaszak. At No. 5, Garretto won 6-3, 6-3 over Adam Zychowicz while at No. 6 Yossi Dahan won 7-6, 3-6, 6-4. Dahan trailed 4-0 in the third set before winning the final six points.
Detroit won in straight sets at No. 1 and No. 3. At No. 2, Veremeichuk won his first set 6-3 over Patryk Koscielski. However Koscielski earned a 6-1 win in the second set and won a 7-6 battle in the third to claim the match.
YSU returns to action next Saturday when it plays host to Cleveland State.
