Chicago, Ill. - The Youngstown State men's tennis team opened their fall schedule with a solid showing at the three-day River Forest Intercollegiate held at the River Forest Tennis Club.
Thomas Rodrigues took first place in the No. 4 singles draw, Yossi Dahan advanced to the championship match at No. 3 and Mitch Maroscher and Joao Garretto each placed third at No. 1 and No. 2 singles. Also in singles play, Luke Purser and Matthew Kritzinger advanced to the consolation finals match and were fourth.
Rodrigues beat John Nogalski (Saint Louis), Chris Casati (DePaul) and Alex Pozo (Southern Illinois) to claim first at No. 4 singles. After a hard-fought semifinals match against Casati, Rodrigues beat Pozo 6-4, 6-3 in the final match.
Dahan won his first two matches against Johan Hedstrom (UIC) and Fran Tonejic (DePaul) to reach the No. 3 draw final. Dahan dropped a 6-3, 3-6, 10-2 decision to Michal Kianicka of Southern Illinois.
At No. 1, Maroscher won his opening match before dropping his semifinal tilt in three sets. He rebounded to beat David Ferragut of Saint Louis 6-3, 6-2 in the third place match. Garretto followed a similar path to placing third at the No. 4 draw. He won his first match before losing in the semifinals. In the third-place contest he won 6-2, 6-4 over Marco Paulo Castro of SDSU.
Headlining the doubles play was Bassem El Mekawi and Garreto who reached the finals at No. 2. The duo won two matches to reach the finals before dropping their last match to Detroit.
The Penguins are next in action on Sept. 30 when they compete at three-day Toledo Invitational.
