Boardman - The Youngstown State men's tennis team dropped its Horizon League opener on Saturday losing to Valparaiso 7-0 at the Boardman Tennis Center.
The Penguins drop to 12-6 overall and 1-0 in the Horizon League. The Crusaders improve to 15-1 and 2-0.
Valpo won the doubles point by claiming the first two completed matches at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots. At No. 1, Mitch Maroscher and Thomas Rodrigues lost 6-4 while at No. 2, Joao Garretto and Danylo Veremeichuk came up short falling 7-6.
In singles play, YSU was swept in all six matches, but dropped two first-set tiebreakers in the defeat.
At No. 3 Veremeichuk lost his first set 7-6 and his second 6-3 to Charile Emhardt. At No. 4, Rodrigues lost his opening set 7-6 and second 6-3 to Dave Bacalla.
At No. 6, Luke Purser took Garrett Gardner to three sets before falling. Purser lost the first set 6-2 before winning the second 7-6. In the third-set super tiebreaker, Gardner won 10-4.
YSU is back in action on Sunday when it takes on UIC at the Boardman Tennis Center. First serve is set for 9 a.m.
