The Youngstown State men's tennis team opens Horizon League play this weekend playing host to Valparaiso and UIC.
The Penguins (12-5) enter Saturday's match with Valparaiso having won seven of their last eight decisions. YSU is also 6-1 at the Boardman Tennis Center this year with its lone loss coming to Toledo. First serve on Saturday against the Crusaders is set for 3 p.m. while Sunday's contest against UIC is set for 9 a.m.
The last time YSU won 13 matches in a season was during the 2012-13 campaign. The school record for dual victories in a campaign is 15 set in 1990-91.
The Penguins have lost their last three decisions to Valparaiso with last win coming on April 14, 2012. The Crusaders enter Saturday's contest with a 14-1 record this spring with their lone loss coming at Wisconsin (4-3). Valpo has won its last 13 dual matches since Feb. 3. Valparaiso won the Horizon League regular season and tournament titles last year.
The Guins have won the last two meetings against UIC, including a 4-3 win in Chicago last year. In the last home contest, YSU beat the Flames 6-1 on April 18, 2014. UIC is 5-6 and has won its last two duals entering a Saturday contest at Cleveland State.
In Horizon League play last year the Penguins were 3-3 and tied for third with Northern Kentucky.
