Penguins Fall to DePaul in Home Opener

Boardman - The Youngstown State men's tennis team dropped a 4-3 decision to DePaul on Friday night at the Boardman Tennis Center. YSU won the doubles point and two singles matches against the Blue Demons.

YSU seized a 1-0 lead in the dual by winning two of three doubles matches. After the Penguins and DePaul split the first two completed matches, Bassem El Mekawi and Joao Garretto picked up a 7-6 (8-6) at No. 3 to claim the point. The duo trailed 5-3 and fought off a match point to rally for the victory.

In singles play, five of the six matches went three sets. DePaul won a straight-set decision to tie the contest at one and added two more wins to go ahead 3-1.

Vasilis Vardakis got the Penguins' first singles win rallying back for the win after dropping the first set. The Blue Demons clinched the match and then Garretto finished off a three-set win for the other Penguins victory.

The Penguins are next in action on Feb. 2 when they visit Southern Miss.
