Penguins Split Matches in First Day of Play in Mississippi

Hattiesburg, Miss. - The Youngstown State men's tennis team earned a 4-0 win over Alabama State and dropped a 5-2 contest to Southern Miss on Friday in a pair of matches played at the USM Tennis Facility.

YSU started a busy day picking up a 4-0 win over Alabama State. In the nightcap against Southern Miss, Danylo Veremeichuk and Bassem El Mekawi picked up singles wins. At No. 3, Veremeichuk defeated Daniel Merker 6-4, 6-4. At No. 5, El Mekawi beat Tom Cecchetto 6-3, 7-6. 

In doubles play, Yossi Dahan and Veremichuk earned a 7-5 win in the No. 3 spot.

Against Alabama State, Matthew Kritzinger earned the clinching win with a 6-1, 6-2 victory. The Penguins took the doubles point and the Hornets defaulted at No. 6 in singles playing with just five players. 

Matthew Kritzinger and Vasilis Vardakis defeated the Alabama State team of Ion Efrim and Carl-Louis Luckmann, 6-4 to clinch the point.

The Penguins conclude their trip with a contest against West Alabama on Saturday morning.
