Orlando, Fla. - The Youngstown State men's tennis team used four singles victories after falling behind 3-0 to Creighton to beat the Bluejays 4-3 on Tuesday at the USTA National Campus.
YSU (6-5) dropped the doubles point and lost matches a No. 1 singles and No. 2 singles before turning the tide.
At No. 2, Vasilis Vardakis picked up a 6-2, 7-6 (4) win over Stratton Brown. At No. 4, Luke Purser picked up a 6-3, 6-2, 10-7 win over Jose Oscar Diaz. At No. 5, Yossi Dahan earned a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Daniel Lopez-Ray to tie the match.
In the final contest, Joao Garretto lost his first set 6-4 to Armando Gandini before bouncing back for a 6-4 win in the second. In the third set, Garretto won a marathon point 15-13 to give the match to the Penguins.
The Penguins earned a win at No. 2 doubles as Purser and Vardakis won 6-2. The Bluejays (4-7) picked up the point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles.
The Guins close out their four-match trip to Orlando on Wednesday with a contest against Fairleigh Dickinson. That match is set for a noon start at Sanlando Park.
