Harmar, Pa. - The Youngstown State men's tennis team improved to 2-0 with a hard-fought 4-3 victory over Duquesne on Sunday at the Alpha Tennis and Fitness Club of Pittsburgh.
The Penguins (2-0) won the doubles point and split the six singles matches to earn the win over the Dukes (0-2).
In doubles, YSU picked up wins at No. 1 and No. 3. At No. 1, Danylo Veremeichuk and Joao Garretto picked up a 6-0 victory while Luke Purser and Pol Virgili Blanco earned a 6-3 win at No. 3.
Singles matches at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 all went three sets with the Penguins picking up wins at No. 1 and No. 3.
YSU's first singles win came at No. 3 as Luke Purser rallied to beat Jared Isaacs, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3. The Dukes earned a win at No. 2 singles as Drew Akins knocked off Joao Garretto, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Veremeichuk rallied from down a set to beat Chris Corrao at No. 1. After dropping the first set 6-4, Veremeichuk won 6-2 and 7-6 (2). The Penguins then clinched the match as Yossi Dahan earned a 6-3, 6-1 win over Joey Matthews at No. 4.
YSU is next in action on Friday when it visits Butler.
