Green Bay, Wis. - The Youngstown State men's tennis team opened Horizon League play with a 5-2 victory over Green Bay on Saturday afternoon at the Western Racquet & Fitness Club.
The Penguins (8-6 overall and 1-0 in the Horizon League) won the doubles point and four of the six singles matches vs. the Phoenix (4-10, 0-1). It was the first time YSU had scored five points in a dual match against Green Bay.
In singles play, five of the six singles matches went three sets. The lone straight set winner was Vardakis. At No. 2 singles, he defeated Green Bay's Charlie Croxford, 7-6, 6-4. Joao Garretto picked up a 7-6, 3-6, 6-3 win over Miles McDowall at No. 3 to clinch the victory.
The Phoenix closed within 3-1 when Lachlan Napier defeated Yossi Dahan 6-3, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5 singles. At No. 1, Danylo Veremeichuk defeated James Ling, 7-6, 2-6, 6-2 to clinch the match for the Penguins.
YSU plays its final non-conference match of the season on Sunday when it visits Marquette in Milwaukee, Wis.
