Boardman - The Youngstown State men's tennis team won five of six singles matches to defeat IUPUI, 5-2, on Saturday afternoon at the Avalon Athletic Club of Boardman.

With the win, YSU improves to 12-7 overall and finished 5-1 in the Horizon League regular season. It's the fewest number of losses the Guins have ever had during the league season. IUPUI falls to 13-10 and 3-3. The win was the Penguins' fourth straight overall.

Winning in singles were Danylo Veremeichuk (No. 1), Vasilis Vardakis (No. 2), Joao Garretto (No. 3), Yossi Dahan (No. 5) and Erik Gran (No. 6).

The Penguins dropped the doubles point for the first time this year in Horizon League play. YSU claimed the victory at No. 1 doubles as Veremeichuk and Garretto picked up a 6-3 victory. The Jaguars won 6-3 at No. 3 doubles while the Penguins built a 5-2 lead at No. 2 doubles. But YSU couldn't put the Jaguars away as they won the next five points for a come-from-behind 7-5 victory and earn the doubles point.

Garretto made quick work of Colton Morehead winning 7-5, 6-0 at No. 3. The next to clinch was Gran who polished off Bradley Luetschwager, 7-5, 6-4. Dahan picked up a 7-5, 6-2 win over Eric Hollingsworth in his final home contest at No. 5 singles. Vardakis clinched the match with a 7-6, 6-4 win over Sean Bailey at No. 2 singles. The final match of the dual was claimed by Veremeichuk who won 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) over Alex Jochim. In the second set, Veremeichuk trailed 6-5 in the tiebreaker before scoring the final three points to earn a win in his final home contest.

YSU is next in action at the Horizon League Championships on Saturday, April 27. YSU's match at the Schwartz Tennis Center at Purdue will begin at 11 a.m. against the No. 3 or No. 6 seed.
