Orlando, Fla. - The Youngstown State men's tennis team earned a hard-fought 4-3 victory over Northern Illinois on Sunday afternoon at the USTA National Campus.
The Penguins (5-4) won four singles contests to earn their second win over a Mid-American Conference foe this year.
The win against the Huskies (8-7) didn't come easy after the Penguins dropped the doubles point.
At No. 1, Veremeichuk beat Eric Marbach, 6-4, 1-6, 13-11. Veremeichuk fought off match points by Marbach in the third-set super tiebreaker at 9-8 and 11-10. However, Veremeichuk won the final three points to claim the victory.
At No. 5, Dahan dropped the first set to Victor Spolidorio 6-3 and trailed 5-4 (40-15) in the second set. However, Dahan fought off three match points and won the second set, 7-6. In the super tiebreaker Dahan used that momentum to earn a 10-4 win.
At No. 4, Luke Purser was the lone Penguin to win in straight sets as he beat Mikko Malinen 6-4, 7-6.
At No. 6, Erik Gran earned the clinching victory. Gran won his first set 7-5 against Shao-Yu Yu before dropping the second 6-4. In the super tiebreaker, he won 10-7 to give the dual victory the Penguins.
In doubles, YSU won at No. 1 as Veremeichuk and Garretto earned a 6-2 victory, however the Huskies won at No. 2 and No. 3 to earn the point.
The Guins return to action on Monday when they take on Samford at Sanlando Park. First serve is set for 3 p.m.
