The Youngstown State men's tennis team returns to action following a week off for matches at Northern Kentucky and Wright State. The contests are YSU's first in the month of April.
Friday's match vs. Northern Kentucky (5-9, 1-3) at the Lindner Tennis Center at Lunken in Cincinnati, Ohio, is set for 1 p.m. On Saturday, the Guins take on the Raiders (7-16, 0-4) at 10 a.m. at the South Regency Tennis and Fitness Center in Miamisburg, Ohio.
The Penguins (8-7 overall and 1-1 in the Horizon League) have only played one match since March 24. Last time out on March 30, the Guins lost a tough 4-3 match to Cleveland State. YSU won the doubles point in the contest while Vasilis Vardakis and Joao Garretto earned three-set victories.
This spring, Garretto, Erik Gran, Luke Purser and Danylo Veremeichuk have each won seven contests in singles play. Garretto and Vardakis are each 2-0 in Horizon League play with wins over Green Bay and CSU.
YSU has been strong in doubles play during league play. The Penguins are 4-0 in completed matches. Against Green Bay, Purser and Vardakis won at No. 2 while Yossi Dahan and Pol Virgili Blanco won at No. 3. In the match vs. Cleveland State, Veremeichuk and Garretto won at No. 1 while Dahan and Blanco picked up a win at No. 3.
Following this weekend's matches, YSU returns home to conclude the regular season against UIC and IUPUI.
- Against Wright State, the Penguins have won the past four meetings, including two wins last year - 5-2 on April 15 and 4-0 at the Horizon League Championship. The Guins are 13-16 all-tme vs. the Raiders.
- Against Northern Kentucky, the Penguins are 4-1 all-time. YSU has won the last three meetings, including a 6-1 win over the Norse last April 14.
